James G. Crosby Obituary — James G. Crosby, 84, of Danvers, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, surrounded by family at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. A respected businessman, community leader, and devoted family man, Jim leaves behind a legacy that extends throughout Danvers and the North Shore.
Known by many through Crosby's Marketplace, Henry's Market, and his decades of community involvement, Jim built a reputation for hard work, generosity, and leadership. Whether helping customers, supporting local charities, or mentoring others in business, he approached every opportunity with energy and determination.
A lifelong Danvers resident, Jim developed a strong work ethic at an early age and carried it throughout his life. After graduating from Holten High School, he continued his education while gaining valuable experience through Star Market's cooperative education program. Those early years helped lay the foundation for a remarkable business career that would eventually make him one of the North Shore's most recognized independent grocers.
What began as ownership of a single neighborhood market eventually grew into a successful chain of stores serving communities throughout Massachusetts. Through Crosby's Marketplace and later Henry's Market in Beverly, Jim became known for creating welcoming neighborhood stores that valued both customers and employees.
Although he achieved significant business success, Jim never measured his life by professional accomplishments alone. His greatest source of pride was his family. He enjoyed celebrating milestones, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and supporting the people he loved. Family gatherings, conversations, and shared experiences brought him tremendous joy throughout his life.
Jim also believed strongly in giving back to the community. He dedicated countless hours to charitable organizations, healthcare initiatives, and local causes that improved the lives of others. His service on numerous boards and organizations reflected his belief that successful businesses should also strengthen the communities they serve.
His leadership and commitment earned recognition throughout his career, including awards for entrepreneurship, business leadership, and community service. Yet those who knew him best often remember not the awards, but his willingness to help others, his determination, and his sense of humor.
Friends and family often described Jim as someone who was always moving, always planning, and always looking for ways to make things better. He approached each day with purpose and enthusiasm. His impact can be seen not only in the businesses he built but in the countless relationships he formed throughout his life.
James G. Crosby is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, extended family members, and many friends who will continue to cherish his memory. His influence on the North Shore business community, charitable organizations, and the lives of those he loved will not be forgotten.
