The Historic Headquarters Farmhouse

Greenbelt’s headquarters offices occupy a historic farmhouse dating to approximately 1785.

The historic Studio Barn was built in 1863 and was later adapted by noted muralist Allyn Cox as his art studio.

Who Was Allyn Cox?

Muralist Allyn Cox purchased the Essex property as a summer home in 1940.

Cox became nationally known for mural work that includes major paintings in the United States Capitol. He worked on the Capitol Rotunda frieze and created the historic scenes now known as the Cox Corridors.

In 1974, Cox donated the farmhouse, Studio Barn, surrounding marsh and open fields to Greenbelt, establishing the reservation that now bears his name.
