About the Essex Historical Society & Shipbuilding Museum

The organization began as the Essex Historical Society in 1937.

In 1976, the organization expanded into the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, creating a museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting the town’s remarkable maritime and shipbuilding heritage.

The Museum acquired the historic A.D. Story Shipyard in 1993, bringing its preservation, education and traditional boatbuilding activities directly to the Essex waterfront.

The Museum also maintains collections and exhibits in the historic 1835 Essex Central Schoolhouse at 28 Main Street.

Before becoming part of the Museum, the timber-framed building served as a two-room schoolhouse and later as a meeting hall for organizations including the Grand Army of the Republic and American Legion.

It became the first home of the Essex Shipbuilding Museum in 1976 and remains part of the Museum’s active campus.
